5G and Coronavirus (Covid-19)
The Coronavirus (Covid-19) and other Pandemics will be a catalyst for the continued uptake of Mobile Broadband 5G communication and Services.
Enterprises and SMEs (Small / Medium Enterprises) will have a focus on having their employees working from home or in remote locations. As organisations are now 24/7, business continuity is now key.
5G CSPs - Communication Service Providers - can use “Network Slices” to setup and configure “just in time” communication for the SMEs with an agreed Quality of Service (QoS) profile. Just in time Mobile Networks can be built thanks to 5G Core Network that supports a full Virtualisation layer. This means that the Network is now built as a Software layer and is hosted within a Cloud "framework".
At the time of writing (2020) the global supply chain is impacted with the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic. Organisations, e.g. Enterprises, SMEs, etc.., will now see merits with progressing with:-
- 5G,
- Industry 4.0,
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI / ML)
- Automation (processes)
Just in time manufacturing based on Industry 4.0 will help with providing greater, or increased, reliability and resilience to the critical parts of the supply chain. This will also allow a greater “re-trenching” of operations in the Home Country, i.e. a reduction of “near” and “off-shoring” business operations. AI / MLE will help with automation, customer insights and will allow CSPs to have a proactive approach to managing their complex Mobile / Wireline Networks.
Organisations must now consider the next steps with future Pandemics that will be on the scale like the: Bubonic Plague, 1918 Pandemic, SARS, MERS, Covid-19, etc.. A clear resilience and business continuity plan will be required. For sure 5G, Automation, Industry 4.0, AI/MLE and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) will be a part of the solution.
History has shown that each Pandemic has created different social challenges for society. Challenges creates a number of new opportunities for the emerging or available technology.
